In 2018, Joe DiMeo was driving home after a long night shift, eager to rest. Unfortunately, he never made it home.

In an interview, DiMeo, now 25, recounted the life-changing event of July 18. He explained that he “fell asleep at the wheel,” causing his car to veer off the road and catch fire.

“I was in the hospital for four months, with about half of that time spent in a coma,” he recalled. “As I regained strength, I began rehab in the fourth month.”

The accident left DiMeo with burns that covered 80% of his body. He underwent more than 20 skin grafts and reconstructive surgeries, but despite the severity of his injuries, he never lost hope of regaining a normal life.

Given the complexity of his condition, doctors at NYU Langone offered him the option of a double hand and face transplant. The procedure was incredibly intricate, lasting 23 hours. DiMeo’s case was so rare that only 45 people worldwide have received this groundbreaking treatment.

Without hesitation, he agreed to undergo the life-changing surgery, which took place in August 2020.

In 2021, at the age of 26, Joe DiMeo found love for the first time since the horrific accident. Jessica Koby, 33, discovered Joe’s story on social media and was deeply moved by his strength and positivity. She reached out to him on Instagram, and their daily conversations quickly turned into romantic dates, leading to a blossoming relationship.

Now, the couple has taken another step forward—Joe recently proposed to Jessica, asking her to spend the rest of her life with him.
